Clare Reilly was born and educated in Wellington. In 1975 Clare pursued her passionate love of painting and is now a full-time artist, living in Christchurch. Her career spans more than three decades of painting and exhibiting throughout New Zealand.

Her work has been described as neo-romantic. Her paintings are imbued with a poetic stillness and calm.  Clare’s works express an underlying connection with the natural environment, in particular an empathy with native birds combined with a celebration of the joyous.  Her paintings celebrate survival and resilience. Over time she has developed a painting style that has an intensity and luminosity of colour that embraces a dream-like atmosphere. She has a close affinity with birds in the landscape, with the bird motif signifying a sense of joy in flight, and hope and renewal.

In recent years, Clare has been involved with the Tui Restoration Project and the Banks Peninsula Conservation Trust. She continues to support various conservation projects and wildlife sanctuaries, especially through the sale of her cards.  Also her work has been used on three book covers, and is featured on the covers of the 2012 and 2013 Contemporary Landscape in New Zealand Art calendar, by Craig Potton.

Clare says, “Recently my works have focussed on issues such as the encroachment of human activity on the limited natural resources we have left, and the historical effects of settlement on the native land species found in my locality”.

She has completed many private commissions and her works have found their way into collections in Argentina, North America, Israel, Europe and Australia, as well as throughout New Zealand.
